A smart home should still feel like your home
Your lights should not stop because a vendor server is unavailable. A camera should not require routine upload merely because that was the factory default. A discontinued cloud should not decide whether a switch still works.
Alien Private Home is a designed, documented local-first smart-home foundation. It uses local control where the selected device genuinely supports it, isolates low-trust products, and makes every remaining cloud dependency visible.

What local-first means
Local-first means essential control and automation run inside the home where practical. The internet can add remote access, updates, weather data or a chosen voice service, but it should not be an accidental dependency for every basic action.
Home Assistant says its core runs on the user’s hardware, stores data locally and talks directly to a device when that device supports it (Home Assistant). The final phrase is crucial. Some integrations are local; some poll a vendor cloud; some use both.
Alien IT checks the actual integration and device path. A local dashboard controlling a cloud-only product is still cloud-dependent.
Google’s Nest Learning Thermostat 1st gen (2011), 2nd gen (2012) and 2nd gen Europe version (2014) stopped connecting to the Google Nest or Google Home apps from 25 October 2025. That means no remote control, notifications or phone settings, and no further software or security updates. The thermostat still works from its own dial, with on-device schedules (Google Nest support). A feature that lives in a vendor’s cloud follows the vendor’s decisions, which is why we prefer devices we can control locally.
A possible system
Depending on the home and selected devices, the service can include:
- Home Assistant on dedicated local hardware
- local-capable Zigbee, Thread, Z-Wave, Matter, Wi-Fi or Ethernet devices
- an IoT guest network or VLAN
- DNS filtering for participating devices, using Pi-hole or a supported gateway where suitable
- explicit outbound policy for devices that do not need unrestricted internet access
- optional UniFi IPS/CyberSecure on compatible deployments where its cloud and maintenance model is accepted
- local automations, scenes and dashboards
- local camera and NVR (network video recorder) integration
- controlled remote access
- encrypted configuration backups with a separate recovery copy
- device and cloud-dependency register
- update and end-of-support review
The design begins with needs (lighting, climate, energy, security, accessibility), not with a box of fashionable protocols.
What stays local
This varies by product. Alien IT documents each important flow as one of:
- local operation with no routine internet need
- local operation with optional cloud features
- local control but vendor-cloud setup, updates or account dependency
- cloud-mediated operation
- unknown until tested
The register includes what happens when internet access is removed. If a device fails completely, that is a purchasing and continuity fact worth knowing.
What this can improve
Privacy
Events and commands that remain local do not need routine processing by a remote vendor. Network segmentation can also stop an IoT device initiating connections to personal computers or local storage.
Resilience
Supported local automations can continue during an internet or vendor-cloud outage. That matters most for ordinary functions people rely on.
Choice
Open, interoperable components can make replacement easier. They do not guarantee permanent compatibility, but they can reduce reliance on one account or app.
Visibility
The system diagram and dependency register show which features leave the home and why.
What it does not solve
Local-first architecture does not guarantee:
- that every compatible product is cloud-free
- that Matter or Thread automatically makes a service local or private
- that devices are secure or supported forever
- that remote access is risk-free
- that cameras cannot be stolen or the local host cannot be compromised
- that household members automatically agree on monitoring and retention
- that backups work without testing and the encryption key
The Australian Cyber Security Centre recommends asking what an IoT device collects and shares, questioning unnecessary internet connectivity, and putting IoT devices on a separate network (ACSC). Isolation limits access to other local systems; it does not, by itself, stop traffic to the vendor.
The deployment process
1. Household needs and safety
We identify critical and optional automations, household access, privacy expectations, accessibility needs and manual fallbacks. A smart lock, alarm or heating control deserves a different failure analysis from decorative lighting.
2. Device and dependency audit
We classify each existing product by protocol, how it connects, its account, where its data goes, whether it needs the internet, its support status and how urgently it should be replaced.
3. Network design
Low-trust devices are separated where practical. Protective DNS and outbound gateway policy are considered separately from local isolation: a VLAN, a separate room for a group of devices, can keep an appliance away from laptops while still allowing it to phone home. Only the communication required for controllers, casting, updates and chosen services is permitted.
4. Local controller and automations
Home Assistant, radios, dashboards and selected automations are configured. Essential operations receive physical or manual fallbacks.
5. Outage and recovery test
We test what works without the internet, what happens after a controller restart, how the configuration restores, and who holds the backup key. Home Assistant recommends keeping a backup copy outside the controller and protecting the emergency-kit key (Home Assistant backups).
6. Handover and maintenance
The home receives a device register, network map, dependency list, recovery instructions and an agreed update/support plan.
Who it suits
Alien Private Home may suit households that:
- want essential automations to survive an internet outage
- are willing to choose products for local capability, not merely brand or price
- use cameras or sensors whose data deserves deliberate custody
- want one supported controller rather than a stack of unrelated apps
- accept that a local system needs updates and backups
It may not suit someone who wants every new cloud gadget installed without compatibility review, expects no maintenance, or prefers a vendor-managed ecosystem over local responsibility.
Cameras deserve separate care
Video is unusually sensitive and storage-heavy. A local NVR can reduce routine cloud upload, but it needs retention rules, disk monitoring, time synchronisation, access control and a decision about remote viewing. Not every recording belongs in a backup; not every camera should see the internet.
Camera scope, audio recording, shared household access and legal obligations must be reviewed for the actual property and jurisdiction.
Frequently asked questions
Does Home Assistant need the internet?
Its core can run locally. Individual integrations, weather services, voice assistants, remote access and updates may need internet connectivity.
Is Zigbee more private than Wi-Fi?
A local Zigbee device typically talks to a local coordinator rather than directly to the internet. Privacy still depends on the coordinator, integration and any associated cloud services.
Does Matter mean cloud-free?
No. Matter improves interoperability and local control possibilities, but a product may still use a vendor account or cloud for setup, extra features, telemetry or remote access.
Will everything work when the internet is down?
Only the functions whose complete dependency path is local. Alien IT tests and documents the actual result rather than relying on a logo.
Can I keep Alexa or Google voice control?
Often, yes, as an intentional optional cloud dependency: the voice service puts an outside company back in the path, so the trade-off and affected devices should be documented.
Make the cloud optional where it matters
In a private home each connection has a reason; nothing is unplugged for its own sake.
